Bittorrent Support

What is / are bittorrents? How do I use them.

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) communications protocol. BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the entire costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead, when data is distributed using the BitTorrent protocol, recipients each supply data to newer recipients, reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source, providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence upon the original distributor.

I want to try out Bittorrent, how do I start?

Files from the internet could not be easier. Windows OS, Linux, Mac and other types should download one of the following BitTorrent Clients:

  • Utorrent - My favorite. Small, light-weight, and powerful enough to do most of my torrent downloads.
  • Azureus - A very nice Java client that incorporates a full-featured GUI with extensive visualizations/statistics about the transfer.

I have a file with an extension that I am not familiar with... What can I do?

I just downloaded a video. I cannot hear or see anything?

Most likely this is an issue with codecs. Video and sound codecs are mandatory in many video formats. Without the appropiate codec, you might hear but not see anything... or worse hear and see nothing. In order to save time, we recommend that you follow the following in order to ensure that you have the appropiate codecs installed on your system.

  • Look at the file extension of the video you just downloaded
  • Do a search on a search engine like Google for "codec ogg" » where ***.ogg is the extension of the file
  • Download the codec and install it

Some people like to simply find a bundled up codec package that has all of the most common codecs available. One such pack is the Gordian Knot

Another package that boasts quite alot of codecs is K-Lite Mega Codec. With both these packages, you are pretty much assured to be able to open and view 99% of the video torrents out there.
